Canberra has taken the top spot in the 2026 global city quality-of-life ranking compiled by the analytical firm Oxford Economics. The Australian capital received a perfect score of 100 in this category, even though it ranks only 45th in the overall Global Cities Index.
The assessment took into account factors such as household income and its distribution, housing affordability, life expectancy, crime rates, and the availability of recreational spaces and cultural institutions.
According to analysts, Canberra’s strong performance is due in part to high salaries, relatively low income inequality, and a large number of stable jobs within the public sector.
European cities dominate the quality-of-life ranking. Only seven cities from outside Europe appear in the top 30: Sydney, Singapore, the American cities of San Jose and Seattle, and the Taiwanese cities of Hsinchu and Taipei.
