Shanghai has launched an unusual maritime vacation format—so-called "cruises to nowhere," during which the ship doesn't call at any ports and returns to its departure point three days later, Xinhua Net reports.
The first voyages are scheduled for three days and two nights, from Saturday to Monday morning. The focus is on relaxation and entertainment onboard. Passengers can enjoy stand-up comedy performances, magic shows, theme parties, and late-night dinners.
For the comfort of travelers, the ship's occupancy is limited to 80% of its maximum capacity. According to the organizers, the average age of passengers is 47, lower than on traditional cruises, which are 55.
One tourist noted that this format allows for relaxation without the need to take additional vacation days.
Tong Danying, a representative of the Shanghai Municipal Transport Commission, stated that the new format is not a watered-down version of standard cruises. This is a fundamentally new, independent tourism product with a different consumption model.
Interest in sea travel in China continues to grow. In 2025, the country's cruise line passenger traffic increased by 25.3% compared to the previous year.
