The international expedition "Voice of the Desert" has launched in Mongolia. Its participants will travel 17,000 kilometers through the largest deserts of Central Asia, including Turkmenistan, according to the publication Burunen.
"The 13-person expedition will travel 17,000 kilometers in 74 days through the largest deserts of Central Asia, including Mongolia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan," the statement reads.
The project is timed to coincide with the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17), which will be held in August in Ulaanbaatar.
This international initiative aims to draw attention to the problems of climate change, land degradation, and desertification. During the journey, participants will study the current state of the deserts of Central Asia, the scale of their expansion, and the practices of local communities in using desert areas for green space, energy production, and sustainable development.
Part of the route will pass through vast desert regions, up to 1,000 kilometers long and about 500 kilometers wide. In some places, temperatures can reach 70 degrees Celsius.
"Desertification has become one of the most pressing problems facing humanity. While more than 30 years ago, 20-24 plant species grew per square meter, today this number has decreased to 4-5 species," noted expedition leader B. Nominchimed.
According to him, the goal of the project is to draw public attention to the problem of desertification and present the research results at COP17.
"The fight against desertification begins with caring for nature. The conscious actions of each person play a vital role here. Therefore, we must begin with ourselves and care for the environment, even if our efforts seem insignificant," he concluded.
