Japanese authorities have decided to increase visa fees for foreigners fivefold, Kyodo News Agency reports. This move is prompted by rising inflation and the depreciation of the yen.
This change will be the first visa fee increase in the country since 1978.
The following fees will take effect in July of this year:
Single-entry visa: The fee will increase from 3,000 to 15,000 yen (approximately $93).
Multiple-entry visa: The fee will increase from 6,000 to 30,000 yen (approximately $186).
"We do not expect this measure to have a direct impact on tourist flow," Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi commented on the change.
According to Kyodo News Agency, after the introduction of the new fees, Japanese visa costs will be comparable to those of other G7 countries.
