Norway’s picturesque fjords have been named the best travel destination for 2027

The picturesque Vestland region in western Norway, centered around the city of Bergen, has been named a top travel destination for 2027 by National Geographic. Experts from the publication recommend visiting for the region’s stunning landscapes, fjord-based adventures, and wellness-focused getaways.

"Fjords carve through the landscape of Norway’s Vestland county in the southwest—a wild region defined by sheer cliffs, turquoise waters, and cascading waterfalls that look as if they were plucked from the pages of Scandinavian mythology. The scale of the natural wonders here is breathtaking; wherever you turn, you are met with majestic, untamed wilderness," the authors note.

Among the region’s primary attractions, experts highlight the Hardangerfjord and Folgefonna National Park, home to one of Norway’s largest glaciers.

The list of recommended spots also includes the famous "Troll’s Tongue" (Trolltunga) rock formation—which juts out roughly 700 meters above a sapphire-blue lake—and the narrow Nærøyfjord, which stretches for over 16 kilometers.

At the heart of Vestland lies Bergen, a city cradled by seven mountain peaks and situated along the edge of a fjord. Historically, the city served as a key hub for the Hanseatic League, whose merchants controlled maritime trade—including the commerce of dried cod. Today, visitors are drawn to the medieval Bryggen district, with its cobblestone alleys, distinctive gables, and vibrant wooden facades.
