Thailand plans to reduce visa-free stay for tourists to 30 days.

Thai authorities plan to reduce the visa-free stay for foreign tourists from 60 to 30 days.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow announced that the government is considering this measure to strengthen controls, as the current two-month period could be abused by non-tourists.

According to the minister, the proposal to reduce the period was drafted by the previous administration, but its consideration was postponed due to the elections. Consultations with relevant agencies are currently planned. The Foreign Minister noted that he does not expect any significant obstacles to the adoption of this initiative. Furthermore, Sihasak Phuangketkeow added that other visa categories, currently considered excessive, will likely be reviewed and consolidated.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has already ordered the creation of a working group to review the existing regulations. Bloomberg notes that the government's actions are a response to complaints from local businesses whose incomes are threatened by the illegal activities of migrants.

Currently, the authorities of the kingdom, where tourism is a critical economic sector, are seeking to find a balance between tightening immigration controls and maintaining the country's attractiveness to visitors.

As a reminder, Thailand has had a 60-day visa-free regime since July 2024 for citizens of 93 countries and territories.
