Cape Verde's World Cup success sparked a tourism boom on the island.

The successful performance of the Cape Verde national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup led to a sharp increase in tourist interest in the island nation. According to analysts, the number of airline ticket purchases to the archipelago increased by 50% compared to last year.

According to the Data Appeal Company and the African Travel and Tourism Association (Atta), early bookings for trips between September 2026 and March 2027 increased by 14.4%.

In the group stage of the World Cup, the Cape Verde team drew with Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and eventual world champion Spain. The team advanced to the knockout stage, where they lost 3-2 to tournament finalists Argentina in a close battle.

Data Appeal Marketing Director Carlos Sendra noted that the team's performance significantly increased the country's international visibility and demonstrated the impact of major sporting events on tourism development. Atta CEO Virginia Messina added that interest in African destinations continues to grow. Last year, the continent's countries welcomed 81 million foreign tourists—an 8% increase from the previous year. Experts believe the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host, could provide an additional boost to tourism development.
