Anime tourism is growing in popularity in Asia: according to Trip.com, searches for anime- and manga-themed trips have increased by 195% year-on-year.
The trend, known in Japan as seichi junrei (anime pilgrimage), revolves around travel to locations featured in popular series, films, and manga. Festivals, themed hotels, and fan events are fueling this growing interest.
One of the largest events was the AnimeJapan 2026 festival in Tokyo. Ticket sales for international visitors increased by 697% compared to last year. The event attracted guests from 82 countries and regions, primarily from China, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The main audience was Gen Z and millennials.
The popularity of anime is also impacting the hotel market. Trip.com is recording an increase in bookings near festival and convention venues. During Summer Comiket 2026, hotel bookings in the Odaiba area increased by 78% year-on-year.
Among the most popular attractions are the Kamakura-Koko-mae railway crossing, famous from the manga "Slam Dunk," as well as the Akihabara and Ikebukuro districts, considered centers of otaku culture.
Interest in themed travel is fueled by streaming platforms and social media. Series like One Piece, Demon Slayer, and Naruto continue to be among the most popular anime titles worldwide.
