Daytime excursions to the pyramids have been banned in Egypt.
Egyptian authorities have restricted daytime visits to the Giza pyramids and Luxor landmarks due to extreme heat. The new rules were introduced to reduce the risk of heatstroke among tourists.
According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, temperatures in Luxor and Aswan are reaching 42–45 degrees Celsius, while in Cairo, temperatures in the shade reach 36 degrees Celsius. The high temperatures and the lack of sufficient shelter from the sun increase the risk for visitors.
Tourisms to the pyramids and tombs are now permitted only until 10:00–11:00 a.m. or after sunset, starting around 7:00 p.m.
Amid the extreme heat, some tourists have opted for seaside resorts on the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea.
"To avoid wasting their vacation, tourists in Egypt should take advantage of affordable programs: the safest daytime hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. are, for example, at the Hurghada Grand Aquarium (tickets cost $32). In the evening, it's worth devoting yourself to night desert safari tours on quad bikes ($15–$25 per person) or visiting indoor water parks like El Gouna, where an evening ticket after sunset costs $30," advises Egypt travel expert Fouad El Gohary.
