The "rent-a-friend" service is gaining popularity in Thailand, as the country faces a high number of lonely people.
Demand for "rent-a-friend" services is growing in Thailand: people are hiring companions for trips, trips to cafes and gyms, and even photo shoots. This increase in demand is attributed to the increasing number of single people and changes in their lifestyles.
According to Euromonitor International, 29.5% of Thai households will be single-person households by 2025. However, clients are turning to rent-a-friend services for reasons other than loneliness.
Students and travelers, for example, can hire someone to help them take photos or simply accompany them on a walk. This becomes a source of income for these providers. One such provider charges 1,000 baht ($30) per hour of assistance. For safety reasons, she carefully selects her clients.
Sociologist Narupon Duangwises believes that such services provide emotional comfort to people who find it difficult to make new acquaintances in everyday life. At the same time, he said, clear rules and safety boundaries are needed to protect performers from harassment and other unwanted situations.
