Airbus has abandoned the idea of double-decker seating on airplanes.
Aircraft manufacturer Airbus explored the possibility of introducing double-decker seating, but the project faced several serious challenges. Limited space, strict aviation standards, and additional costs make the project impractical.
The idea of double-decker seating dates back to 1948. Recently, the Spanish startup Chaise Longue revisited the idea and proposed its design to Airbus, but its implementation was deemed unlikely.
The main challenges relate to limited cabin height, especially on short- and medium-haul aircraft.
There are also strict aviation standards. Passenger evacuation regulations make such a solution ineffective, given that in emergency situations, mobility and speed are paramount.
Furthermore, increasing the number of seats will impact aircraft weight, fuel consumption, and crew workload.
Airlines must also consider the requirement for lavatories and crew members.
As a result, cabin modernization will be a complex and prohibitively expensive undertaking. While lower seats could give passengers more legroom, the double-decker layout remains a concept with no real prospects for implementation.
