A new city called Jirian will be built in the Egyptian desert.
Egyptian authorities have announced the start of construction on a new city called Jirian, Reuters reports.
The city will be located in the desert, 42 kilometers west of Cairo, covering an area of 6.8 million square meters.
Jiryan will be part of the massive New Delta agricultural project, covering 2.28 million acres. Approximately 10 million cubic meters of water from the Nile will be channeled there daily, representing approximately 7% of the country's annual water quota. These resources will be used to replace irrigated land in the fertile delta.
The project includes luxury housing with glass facades, as well as commercial areas, a marina, and a free economic zone.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly stated that the country "strives to use unconventional and innovative approaches to increase land value and attract investment" amid water shortages, energy challenges, and economic difficulties.
