Which countries have the most airports: infographic
Air travel plays a vital role in global connectivity, enabling trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between continents. This infographic, based on data from the CIA's World Factbook, shows how many airports and airfields are currently operational in different countries.
The United States leads by far in the number of airports. Its vast territory, diverse landscapes, and developed regional air transportation system explain its impressive number of airports—16,116. This is three times more than Brazil (5,297), which ranks second. Airports in the United States range from small local runways to major international hubs.
The situation is different in China. Despite its vast population and territory, it has only 552 airports. The main reason for this is its emphasis on high-speed rail, the network of which will reach 45,000 kilometers by 2024. These lines provide numerous regional and intercity routes that in other countries would be served by short flights. Furthermore, China's population is concentrated in the eastern provinces, while in the United States and Brazil it is more evenly distributed.
