Turkey has proposed replacing buffets with a la carte menus in hotels.

Turkish authorities are considering eliminating the buffet format in hotels to reduce food waste, according to the newspaper Sabah.

If the government takes action, the all-inclusive system will be replaced by an à la carte menu, where guests order as much food as they can eat. The Council for Agricultural and Food Policy of the Presidential Administration is preparing a report on this issue.

According to the latest data, approximately 23 million tons of food are thrown away annually in the country. The most common items wasted are baked goods, fruits, and vegetables. Almost half of all-inclusive breakfasts go uneaten.

"Waste increases even more as the number of people increases. For example, three or four people can easily be full from a breakfast for two. <…> Food that is placed on a plate but not touched goes straight into the trash," says council member Ramazan Bingöl.
