Sky Bus: China builds elevator to transport schoolchildren to mountain top
A second glass elevator has opened in China's Yunnan Province, helping children from a village in the Nizhu River Grand Canyon reach their mountaintop school, according to the Chinese newspaper Yunnan.
Thanks to the new system, a journey that previously took about three hours now takes just 30 minutes.
The elevator, named "Fuyao Stairs," is 288 meters high. It is located next to the first elevator, the "Qingyun Stairs," built in 2022. Together, they form a complex already being called the "sky school bus."
Previously, children had to navigate steep slopes and ford rivers. The village is located at an altitude of approximately 1,100 meters, and the primary school is at the mountaintop, near 1,650 meters.
The new "Fuyao Stairs" is 20 meters higher than the first elevator. Its cabin is equipped with a transparent glass wall with a 360-degree view, and travels at speeds of up to 5 meters per second.
The new lift also solved the problem of overloading the original one. Rides are free for village residents, and schoolchildren have a dedicated green corridor, allowing them to get to and from school more quickly.
The project isn't just for local residents. The glass lifts are also expected to attract tourists and boost the local economy.
