Chinese airline to launch world's longest direct flight
This December, China Eastern Airlines will launch a new route between Shanghai and Buenos Aires. It will be the longest direct flight in the world, according to China Daily.
The route will be 19,631 kilometers long. Flight time from Shanghai will be approximately 25 hours and 30 minutes, while the return flight will take almost 29 hours, due to headwinds. The flights will be operated on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, with a technical stop in Auckland. Passengers will remain in the transit area and will not need to change flights.
Tickets start at $1,718 in economy class and $6,435 in business class. The flight will operate twice weekly, departing from Shanghai on Mondays and Thursdays and from Buenos Aires on Tuesdays and Fridays. By comparison, the current record for nonstop flights is held by Singapore Airlines on the Singapore-New York route (17,662 km, nearly 19 hours). Among economy class flights, the record belongs to Air China: Beijing-São Paulo via Madrid (17,583 km).
The new route will highlight the growing importance of China's transport and diplomatic cooperation with South America. Experts believe that demand for such a long flight will be moderate, but the route is seen as an important part of strengthening ties between the regions.
