An American startup's tourist capsule has reached the upper limit of the atmosphere.
American startup Space Perspective announced the successful testing of the Neptune-Excelsior spacecraft. A balloon carrying a pressurized capsule was launched on September 15 from the deck of the Voyager 3 spacecraft and ascended to an altitude of 30.5 kilometers above Earth's surface.
The capsule reached the boundary of the atmosphere and space.
The unmanned flight lasted six hours, during which the company's engineers tested the spacecraft's key systems, including flight control, launch, and controlled splashdown.
The 4.9-meter-diameter capsule is designed to accommodate eight tourists and a captain. It is equipped with a system that ensures comfortable temperature and pressure in the conditions of "space."
Neptune-Excelsior is hydrogen-powered and ascends at 19 km/h. It offers a longer and more relaxing space experience compared to suborbital flights. Space Perspective plans to begin commercial flights as early as 2025, offering tourists trips for $125,000. By comparison, a Virgin Galactic flight costs $450,000.
